Kōkua Mau and HITA presented this one-day, in-person Hawaiʻi training for experienced medical interpreters. It addressed palliative-care conversations involving serious illness and end-of-life topics.
Workshop overview
The multimedia, interactive training used videos, slide-based instruction, and guided interpreting and sight-translation practice. Bilingual medical glossaries and practice activities were provided.

Cindy Roat is an international language-access consultant and trainer with more than 30 years of healthcare-interpreting experience. She was the principal author of the original Bridging the Gap, author of Healthcare Interpreting in Small Bites, and a founder and current board member of NCIHC.

- Glossaries and practice activities in Cantonese (Traditional Chinese), Chuukese, Ilocano, Japanese, Korean, Kosraean, Mandarin (Simplified Chinese), Marshallese, Pohnpeian, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.
- Lunch was provided; capacity was limited to 25 applicants.
Historical registration, scholarships, and CE
Registration closed. The deadline was 5:00 PM on January 14, 2026. Full scholarships were available to participants from the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Republic of Palau. The course was approved for 7 CCHI CE credits and 0.7 IMIA/NBCMI CEUs; certificates required full, on-time attendance.
