The Hawaii Interpreters and Translators Association (HITA) is excited to present a workshop designed to equip interpreters with the essential knowledge for effective interpreting in special education IEP and other school meetings. This informative session, taking place on Saturday, September 7th from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, will guide participants through best practices for ensuring clarity, cultural sensitivity, and adherence to legal and ethical considerations.

Featured Speakers:
  • Sandra Tsukiyama: A seasoned Spanish & Portuguese interpreter/translator with over 20 years of experience in the medical field, state and federal court. Sandra brings a unique perspective to the workshop, having taught Special Education and Music in public schools. Her firsthand understanding of the challenges faced in special education settings will provide invaluable insights for interpreters.

  • Mark Heu: A Transition Coordinator at Roosevelt High School with over 20 years of experience in guiding students towards their post-high school goals. Mark's expertise in assessing student preferences and interests will offer valuable insights on how interpreters can effectively support students and their families during special education meetings.

  • Gain a deeper understanding of what schools are required to do with special education students, such as conducting IEP meetings, Eligibility meetings, Assessments, etc., and what the differences are between them.

  • Explore legal requirements and ethical considerations specific to special education interpreting.
